Description of the Related Art Compressors, especially of the centrifugal type, have been used for many years in motor vehicle air conditioning systems. A typical compressor of this type includes a shaft rotatably mounted in a housing and drivingly connected to a motor. A plurality of compressor blades are formed integrally with the shaft. Each of the blades is arranged so that the leading edge thereof is generally disposed at the outer periphery of the shaft. The motor used for driving the compressor typically includes a rotor and a stator. The stator is provided as a plurality of armature windings wound about the periphery of the rotor. Typically, an appropriate core is provided in the stator and the armature windings are energized to drive the rotor. The drive torque applied to the compressor is transmitted to the shaft via a bearing assembly. The bearing assembly is typically disposed at one axial end of the compressor housing and supports the shaft in the bore of a bearing sleeve. The bearing sleeve is seated in a bearing retainer that is formed with a pair of opposed, axially extending ears that project radially outward from the bearing sleeve. The ears project into the space between the bearing sleeve and the shaft, and serve to limit axial movement of the shaft with respect to the bearing sleeve. The conventional bearing assembly has a number of drawbacks. In particular, the conventional bearing assembly does not provide for effective alignment of the shaft with the bearing sleeve. Moreover, the conventional bearing assembly does not prevent undesired rotation of the shaft with respect to the bearing sleeve.John Armstrong (merchant) John Armstrong (1769 – 1835) was an English merchant, born in Leicester, who was notable for his business in the East India trade and for his social position and benevolence. Early life Armstrong was born in 1769 at Leicester, the son of a mercer and later a hosier in that city. He was educated at the grammar school of his native town and then at Repton. After being articled to a firm of Edinburgh merchants, he joined his father, and in 1791 set sail for India with a £4,000 investment. Career The Indian be359ba680
